Also known as wild clematis …Virgin’s Bower(Old Man’s Beard)-Clematis virginiana- is seen a lot draped over fence rows and other shrubs with it’s showy white blossoms.It is sometimes confused with Wild Cucumber.It’s seeds develop soft,feathery plumes, the “old man’s beard”.It blooms from July to September.It is found along stream banks and moist soil conditions.It is an aggressive grower-just like most of my weeds-and can take over.It is native to eastern N.A. and attracts butterflies and humingbirds.Not a good idea for you foragers-it is toxic.
