Red ink…Pokeweed-Phytalacca americana-also known as pokeberry and inkberry.

These plants make a statement when massed together.Their reddish stalks, big leaves, and red berries stand out in a crowd. It must be the treelike form-they are non-woody and hollow-that gives them a lift. The roots and berries are said to be poisonous

but the bird like them-shocker!.Also the shoots of young plants are gathered and

after the careful prep are eaten as greens.Pokeweed is considered a perennial and reproduces by seed or from a large taproot. As usual with weeds-they are found in

rich pastures, fields, waste places-my fav, fence rows, and woodlands.pokeweed is found in the eastern half of the United States and into Canada and Mexico and have been introduced into Europe. All in all it is a cool plant.wpid-wp-1412877126846.jpegwpid-wp-1412877173813.jpeg
