A weed of the Prairie…

Blue Vervain-Verbena hastata-is a plant that can be found in a weed,wildflower,or tallgrass prairie books! There are 75-100 species with some in your garden and have heavy distribution in the eastern part of the U.S.Their usual habitat includes pasture,meadows,waste places-my fav,wet places.Ok now the fun stuff! In Shakespeare’s time the vervain was believed to be a charm against witches.In more modern times the vervain was regarded as a “herb of grace” used in various ceremonies.It was also used as a source for medicinal herbs.You can see this versatile plant in flower June to September.
