Thoreau for New Years Eve…

The evergreens appear to relieve themselves soonest of the ice, perhaps because of the reflection from these leaves. Those trees, like the maples and hickories, which have most spray and branches make the finest show of ice…I love Nature partly because she is not man, but a retreat from him.None of his institutions control or pervade her…If this world were all man,I could not stretch myself,I should lose all hope.Journal-Jan 3,1853.
