Superweed…definition please.

The basic  definition of a superweed  is one that is tolerant of the chemical  glyphosate and resistant to multiple herbicides modes of action. This also includes 2,4D,dicambia,and others. They currently affect 60-70 million A. and thus promoting more use of herbicides.Another concern has been whether GM crops have lead to the development of superweeds. The conclusion I read is they do not.

Also there are over 30 species of weeds now tolerant of herbicides.The list is as follows:smooth pigweed,palmer amaranth,spinny amaranth,tall waterhemp,common and giant ragweed,hairy begartracks,sweet summer grass,ripgut brome,tall windmill,windmill grass,hairy flebane,horseweed,summertime fleabane,sourgrass,woody borreria,kochia,topical strangletop,perennial ryegrass,italian ryegrass,rigid ryegrass,buckorn plantain,annual bluegrass,wild radish,annual sowthistle,johnson grass,goosegrass,junglerice,liverseedgrass.This list includes the entire planet to date.

Superweeds…Out of the way!

The beat goes on with the opportunity of feeding a world that will have 9 billion humans-now at about 7-by 2050 and easily 10b by end of the century! In my humble opinion we have the classic :”the dog chasing it’s tail”.We need the food produced on a mass scale but to do so we have basic food stuffs that is now “genetically modified” to survive the scale of production that was invented to increase production-i.e.,eliminate weeds that lessened production(increase yield).Basically the GMO’s were developed to tolerate greater uses of herbicides. It is estimated that 70% of all corn, soybeans, and cotton are from GMO seeds. And the lost to weeds in our fields is $1b which has doubled since ’09 at 70 million A. being infested.Dow is currently waiting approval for it’s latest product-Enlist-to use a broader mode of action to control these unruly weeds.Currently 24 species of weeds are listed to cause harm in our farmers fields( more on that latter). One more opportunity-if we really need one-is the idea of foods being developed from these seeds  are being called “Franken” foods. This is a story by it’s self.

Hey, always someone thinking positive. Our ecologists are suggesting solutions to this problem that is not going away any time soon.Current solutions include crop rotation, the use of cover crops and mulches, and continued tillage.

In short, the weeds are going to fill in the earth where mankind does not.Weeds are by nature “opportunistic”.Man should lead, follow,or get out of the way!
